It combines essential theory with hands-on training to deepen your skills.

You’ll progress from pool sessions—mastering breathing, finning, equalization, and safety—to open water depth training up to 20 meters, making it ideal for anyone ready to explore the underwater world through focused and safe breath-hold diving.

You’ll gain a solid understanding of freediving physiology, breathing and relaxation techniques, and safety protocols, all while progressing from the pool to open water—reaching depths of up to 20 meters. With small class sizes offering an almost private setup, you'll build both skill and confidence, setting the stage for deeper dives and more meaningful underwater experiences.

Course Details

What to expect?

The course is divided into four key components: online learning, theory review, pool training and open water training.

Depending on the season (summer/ winter) the schedule may vary slightly:

​

- Online learning - Approx. 3 hours, completed in your own time.

- Theory review - Friday from 6pm to 9pm (approx.).

- Pool training - Saturday from 8am to 12:00pm.

- Open water training - Sunday from 8am to 4pm (approx.).

Online learning: Complete at your own pace before the pool sessions. This module covers the essential theory of freediving: 

- Approx. 3 hours of self - paced study.

- Freediving gear overview.

- Freediving physiology.

- Lost Motion Control (LMC).

- Freediving disciplines.

- Pressure and equalization.

- Rescue procedures.

- Buddy system and safety.

- Planning your dives.

- Understanding the diving environment.

You must complete the online learning and pass the final test before the pool session. Don’t worry—I’ll be here to support you every step of the way if you need help.

​

Theory review: Introduction and theory reinforcement: 

- Online theory review and explanation.

- Overview of freediving equipment.

- Breathing exercises.

Pool session: Time to put your skills into practice! You'll experience:

- Freediving breathing techniques.

- Static and dynamic apnea.

- Safety drills and buddy procedures.

- LMC and Blackout rescue.

- Basic equalization techniques.

- Duck dive.

- Foundational freediving techniques.

Open water session: Time to experience depth!

- Freediving breathing techniques.

- Equalization.

- Duck dive.

- Body position and streamlining (constant weight).

- Constant weight dive (max. 20 meters).

- Blackout rescue.

- Foundational freediving techniques.

• Theory review: 110 old Waipu road, Mangawhai.

• Pool session: 47 Jack Boyd Drive, Mangawhai Heads (Swim Mangawhai).

• Open water session: Kai Iwi Lakes, Promenade Point, 394 Kai iwi Lakes Road, Omamari, Dargaville 0373.

Can I join the class?
• This course is designed for beginner Freedivers with no prior experience.

• Divers with some experience looking to improve their skills.

• Must know how to swim and be comfortable in water.
• All fitness levels are welcome!

• Open to ages 14 and up.

​

What equipment do I need?
• Pool swimwear (water temperature is 32°C—wetsuit not necessary).

• Wetsuit - for open water training.
• Fins (any type).
• Weight belt and weights.
• Mask and snorkel.

The cost of the Freediver - SSI includes:
• Online and theory training.
• Pool entry fees (mineral-heated pool 32°C).

• Open water training - full day.

• Access to free online courses, log book, and learning resources via the SSI platform.
• International certification upon successful completion.

The full course fee is $549.00 per person.
